District Institute of Education and Training(DIET) established as per  National Education  Commission of 1964-66 popularly known as Kothari Commission. Under this commission, National Education Policy 1986 was formed and this policy recommended to establish DIETs in each district of the country to provide pre- service and in- service training to primary school teachers. The first DIET was established in 1988 in Tamil Nadu. The aim of establishing this Institute is to provide quality training to teachers and to serve as a hub of academic excellence and professional development. Kokrajhar DIET was established in 1989 as first phase DIET in Assam  along with other DIETs namely- Kamrup, Sonitpur, Cachar, Jorhat and Nagaon.

As a district academic nodal agency, Kokrajhar DIET has been supporting on many educational schemes and projects besides having own nature of work. When District Primary Education Program(DPEP) was started in 1994-95 in Assam that time Kokrajhar DIET took major role  in the district. Imparting training to teachers, training module preparation, community sensitization program, field survey, data collection, opening of Alternative Schools(AS centre) etc. After DPEP,  when Sarba Siksha Mission(SSA) started in 2001 that period also this Institute had been working with the mission to uplift the educational status of the district.

 At present, the Institute is taking some important programs through D.El.Ed trainees. To develop FLN for Children, trainees are taking classes in their nearby schools on every 2nd and 4th Saturday. Bridging Learning Gap program in DIET’s lab schools have been taken after final term end evaluation in every year. Supervision and monitoring to the schools for academic support  by faculty members is a regular activity. Time to time, the Institute conducts, training for in- service teachers on different areas like-  transition on text book, pedagogy, use of ICT and vocational education. In fact, this Institute has been trying to give best effort for quality education in the district.
